Catalyst Resources Development Group LLC is a social business in its mission, the way it operates, and how it gives back.
Mission
To work in partnership with corporations, nonprofits, and development agencies and artisanal & small-scale miners to find governance and market-based solutions that improve the lives, conditions, and incomes of artisanal & small-scale miners, their families, and surrounding communities.
Catalyst Resources Development Group LLC: Achieving responsibility and sustainability in mineral supply chains.
Values
We understand that there is no such thing as ‘sustainable’ mining, but we work everyday to make it measurably safer, ‘greener’, and more socially responsible. We choose to focus on artisanal & small-scale mining because this is indisputably the most marginalized part of the mining sector, that has the fewest resources and experts dedicated to its professionalization, and the part of the mining sector with the most development potential.
We believe that:
- Without engagement, dire conditions in ASM will simply persist.
- Markets can be a powerful force for change and educated consumers are the engine.
- Mining is a ‘window in time’. It is a one-time opportunity to use non-renewable natural resources for the betterment of local communities and economies.
- Debt-management programs, savings incentives, professionalization programs, and environmental stewardship are core components for most meaningful ASM programs.

How we give back
CRDG donates a portion of its annual profits to human rights and environmental organizations worldwide. For 2014 and 2015, we are pleased to support the Gola Rainforest National Park in Sierra Leone via the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSBP). This follows a visit there in 2013 when we were deeply impressed by its visionary management, depth & breadth of staffing, and partnerships with surrounding communities in Salone.
CRDG is committed to improving its everyday environmental footprint. It uses energy-efficient devices and appliances, is committed to reducing paper and e-waste, and purchases offsets for its staff and consultants’ project travel.
